The sooner we divert waste from landfill and recover the resources we have through recycling and composting – the better it will be for the environment and all of us.
The Victorian legislation Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021 states Council must provide services for collection of general rubbish, recycling, food and garden organics, and separate glass before 2030.
Like most municipalities across Victoria, Yarra Ranges Council has planned for the service changes to occur when the cycle of the waste management contracts come to an end and new contracts are entered into, detailing all the new requirements the service provider must provide to support Council in meeting its obligations.
The new kerbside collection, hard waste and bundled branches and public street and park litter bin contracts were all due to end in 2023, which is one of the reasons why this year was chosen to implement the service changes.
