Snakes in our environment

Snakes can be found throughout many areas across the Yarra Ranges. You are more likely to see snakes through the months of October to April when the weather is warmer.

Snakes normally avoid people, but may bite if they are disturbed or threatened.

To stay safe from snakes you should:

  • Keep grass in your garden short
  • Remove debris including rubbish and building material from your property
  • Wear gloves, layers and protective shoes while working outside
  • Keep pets away from bushy areas with tall grass

If you see a snake, keep calm and stay away from it. Do not let children and pets near the snake.

Yarra Ranges Council will not remove snakes from public land however, you can contact a licensed snake handler by calling the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 13 61 86 or by calling us on 1300 368 333 to get the contact details for a snake handler.

If you are bitten by a snake, dial 000 immediately.
