Trauma informed practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and children

Presented by Yarra Ranges Best Start and Connected Minds Psychology

Training focus

This session is for professionals working within early years and school settings (educators, teachers, nurses and wellbeing staff from kindergartens, maternal and child health, early childhood education, and supported playgroups).

The training will focus on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families to support culturally safe and trauma-informed practice, covering:

• background of colonisation, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma on Aboriginal peoples' social and emotional wellbeing.

• understanding of how trauma impacts the developing mind, brain and behaviour.

• tools needed to provide trauma-informed responses to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to create safety and support their long-term development.

Facilitator

Jordan Gibbs is a proud Peerapper/Anglo-Celtic man who was born and raised off country. He has worked in Aboriginal Health Research and teaching for over a decade, and in clinical practice since 2021.  Jordan currently works at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in the Aboriginal Health Team and at Connected Minds Psychology as a provisional psychologist.
