Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria present Lilac Time

Lilac Time will be presented in costume with Franz Schubert's accompaniment in the delightful and intimate surroundings of the gardens at the historical cottage, The Knowe (Sassafras) with live singing and music from a Palm Court Trio. This will be an “immersive performance”, where the garden location is used instead of a traditional stage - the audience is completely surrounded by the action of the play.

Gardens open at 1pm for picnics.

One Welcome Drink is included in the ticket price. Additional drinks available at the bar.

Capacity is limited and these popular events always sell out.

Although Franz Schubert died tragically young, he left behind the most spontaneous and irrepressible outpouring of musical invention that the world has ever known including Lilac Time. Lilac Time is set in the Vienna that stimulated Schubert's brief, but rich, music life with its story based on his passionate and unrequited love for Lili Veit, the youngest of three charming sisters. For his beloved, Schubert writes a song, the exquisitely lovely “I want to carve your name on every tree." However, being too shy to sing of his feelings, he persuades his best friend, Franz Schober, to sing and, alas, Lili falls in love with the wrong Franz. For Franz Schubert there can be no other love and the operetta ends with his decision to devote the rest of his life to his music.
