Litter bin baskets

Container-Deposit-Scheme-Bakset-7.jpg

Following a successful six-month trial in 2025, Council expanded the litter bin basket program to 350 baskets on street and park litter bins across the municipality.

Baskets are attached to bins to reduce Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme recyclables going to landfill. Community members are encouraged to leave their empty eligible drink containers in one of the baskets or collect ones already there and take to them to a refund point for a 10-cent refund.

Eligible containers include glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans and liquid paper board cartons with the 10c mark on the label.

Council partnered with CDS Vic to run the trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do containers in the baskets belong to?

Containers in the baskets are for anyone to take. You can take them for yourself or collect them to raise money for your local club, school, or community group. When you return them to a refund point you will receive 10-cents for each container.

Can my school/community group adopt a basket to collect all the containers in it?

Baskets can’t be adopted for exclusive collection. Any containers left in the baskets are available for anyone of the community to collect.

What containers are eligible for a 10c return?

Most drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a 10-cent refund. Look for the 10c mark on the label. It is often located near the barcode. To find out more about eligible containers visit cdsvic.org.au/eligible-containers

Some containers aren’t accepted, such as plain milk bottles, wine bottles, and spirit bottles. These can be recycled in your normal kerbside recycling bin.
