Waste Education Programs
Bin Education Program
Yarra Ranges Council regularly checks recycling and FOGO bins before collection from households to minimise contamination through education. If your bin is checked you may receive a coloured tag on your bin handle.
Green Tag
A green tag indicates your bin has been checked and has the correct waste within it.
Orange Tag
An orange tag indicates we’ve found items considered to be contamination in your bin. If you are unsure which items should not be in the bin, please refer to the What Can I Put in Each Bin page.
Tags are used for educational purposes only. They are easily removed, can be recycled and any bin with a tag will still be collected as normal. If you are unsure which items belong in which bin, check out our A-Z waste guide.
Schools and Early Years
Free Recycling and/or FOGO bins
To help educate children and young people attending schools and early years centres in the Yarra Ranges about waste and recycling, Yarra Ranges Council provides up to four recycling and/or FOGO bins free of charge. Schools and centres may select the combination of recycling and FOGO bins that suits their needs. Additional bins can be provided for a fee. VISY Recycling Education
VISY have worked with Cool Australia to create recycling education activities for early years through to Year 10 students.

Community Education
Adult community groups wanting to learn more about bin usage, recycling, FOGO and reducing waste should get in touch with our waste education team. The team is available to deliver a small number of community* presentations each year. These include U3A, Probus Clubs, retirement villages, library groups etc.
*Please note – we are unable to provide presentations for school or early years groups.
