Graffiti

Overview

Graffiti is a complex challenge for councils everywhere.

While some people see graffiti as a form of artistic expression, it often appears in places where it isn’t wanted - impacting the look and feel of our streets, parks, and public spaces.

Council works hard to balance the need for quick removal with the costs of cleaning, the safety of workers, and the importance of fostering pride in our neighbourhood.

Managing graffiti isn’t just about cleaning walls - it’s about building partnerships with residents, businesses, and young people to prevent vandalism, encourage creativity in the right spaces, and keep our community welcoming for everyone.

Graffiti FAQs

Why isn’t graffiti always removed immediately?

Due to the large size of the Yarra Ranges, if graffiti is not offensive, we may collate graffiti reports for an area over a few days and attend to them all at once. This improves efficiency and increases the amount of graffiti our team can attend to.

We aim to remove non-offensive graffiti within 5 working days.

We aim to remove offensive graffiti within 2 working days.

What graffiti is categorised as offensive?

Any graffiti that includes political, sexual or racist images or language is categorised as offensive.

Why don’t you treat all graffiti the same, offensive or not?

Due to the size of the Yarra Ranges, our Graffiti team can’t be everywhere at once, so we need to prioritise offensive graffiti removal to ensure we can get to it quickly.

Why don’t you remove graffiti from private property, or assets that belong to other authorities?

We don’t have the authority to do works on property that does not belong to us however we do work together with private property owners and community groups to assist them to manage graffiti on property not owned by Council.
