Hazardous Waste Disposal

Hazardous materials should never be placed into your household bins.

Batteries

Batteries do not belong in any kerbside bin. B-cycle is Australia’s official battery recycling scheme. Drop off partners include Aldi, Battery World, Big W, Bunnings, Coles, The Good Guys and Woolworths. Visit bcycle.com.au to find your nearest drop off location.

Small household batteries (e.g: household (i.e. AA), camera, laptop, power tools) can also be disposed of through e-waste collection services at waste transfer stations. For more information, please see e-waste disposal.

Car batteries can be disposed of at Waste Transfer Stations

Paint, household chemicals and fuels

• Paint – dispose at select Waste Transfer Stations for free through the Paintback program.
• Household chemicals and unwanted fuels - dispose through Detox Your Home* collection.

Lightglobes and fluorescent tubes

• Light globes – drop off at Montrose Waste Transfer Station       
• Light fittings and lamps (globes removed) are considered e-waste and should not be placed in your household rubbish bins.

Gas bottles and gas canisters

• BBQ gas bottles – dispose at Coldstream, Wesburn or Lysterfield Waste Transfer Stations (not accepted at Montrose Transfer Station)
• Butane gas canisters (camping stoves) – dispose through Detox Your Home program
• SodaStream CO2 canisters can be returned/exchanged at SodaStream suppliers. See the SodaStream website for more information.
• For all other types of gas canisters, please contact the manufacturer. They cannot go into any bin and are not accepted at transfer stations for disposal, despite what manufacturers may say to the contrary. We strongly encourage residents not to purchase these items unless they are returnable to the manufacturer or supplier for safe disposal. 

Flares and ammunition

• Flares and ammunition can be taken to local police stations.
• Ammunition can also be taken to local licensed firearms dealer.

Farm chemical drums 

You can dispose of clean, non returnable crop production and animal health chemical drums at the Coldstream Transfer Station. You must book an appointment for loads of 50 or more containers.

Containers must have the Drum Muster logo, be free of residue inside and out and have been flushed, pressure rinsed or triple rinse.
