The Yarra Glen Memorial Hall will be transformed by the community to celebrate the annual Yarra Glen Festival of Light, supported by Council.

Community members are invited to come along, bring their own lantern and contribute to the ‘Light Room’ installation in the Memorial Hall on 18 August, between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Each lantern will be given an LED light ahead of ‘Light’s Out’ at 6.00pm when everyone can enjoy the display.

There will be a food stall available on site provided by the Yarra Glen Football and Netball Club and a teenage zone from 8:.00pm to 9.00pm with house,, ambient, psychedelic and trance music.

A lantern making workshop will be held at the memorial hall ahead of the event on 21 July where community members can get hands-on with the project.

Festival of light organiser Beth Williams started the event a few years ago with some friends to celebrate the end of winter being in sight and to promote community spirit.

“We saw it as a beautiful opportunity to create something sacred and magical and very personal for our community,” Ms Williams said.

“We love it when the older community members, mums and dads and tiny children come and make lanterns at our annual workshops.”

Ms Williams said the festival, which is supported by Council’s Grants for Community, is about bringing the community together and what people most enjoy is the spiritual element the festival offers.

The Festival of Light was awarded $1,000 through the Council’s Small Grants funding.

“This year we don’t have much in the way of funds available, so the Council’s support is really amazing,” she said.

“With a small grant we can cover the LED’S and the hire of the hall.”

Applications for the 2019 Grants for Community round close on 12 August.
