Scope of works

Green Street Open Space is a new community park that will deliver better site access, different seating options for all users, shade, a natural amphitheatre for events and larger gatherings, a picnic shelter and garden beds with a mixture of native and exotic planting. The site will remain open and flexible for different community uses throughout the year.

What is the background of this vacant land?

Previously the site was used as a railyard and motor mechanic. Environmental testing found moderate levels of contamination on the land due to these previous uses, which are acceptable for commercial or recreational uses. As a result, the design has carefully avoided any significant disturbance on site to deliver a safe and healthy park for community.

How will Council use this land?

The land will be used as community open space.

The Victrack offer to sell land to Council at a 50% discounted rate came with a condition that the land will be kept as community open space forever.

Council used the Public Open Space fund for Ryrie Ward to cover the entire purchase price of the land.

This fund is generated by contributions from developers who have subdivided land in the Ryrie Ward.

What can be included in the space?

The land must be kept as open space.

At this stage elements such as paths, seats and planting are being considered.

The feedback told us that it is important small events such as the community market can still be held on the site, so it will not be 'over crowded' with features.
