Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to capture, harm, disturb or kill them. Snakes are not considered pests.

If you see a snake in a council park or reserve, remain calm and keep children and pets away; snakes will often move away from humans. Yarra Ranges Council will not remove snakes from public land. If you need assistance with a snake on private property contact a licensed snake handler.

If you are bitten by a snake, dial 000 immediately.

Snakes are found throughout many areas of the Yarra Ranges and are generally more active during the warmer months (October to April). Snakes are typically found in bushy areas near water sources. Areas of the Yarra Ranges where water is available, such as around lakes, rivers and creeks, are ideal habitat for a snake to find water and food. Snakes normally avoid people and often move away before they are seen, however, they may bite if they are disturbed or threatened.
