City Nature Challenge 2026

The City Nature Challenge is a global event where cities around the world compete over a four day period to see who can contribute the most observations of flora, fauna and fungi to iNaturalist, a citizen science platform. Yarra Ranges is partnering with 32 other Melbourne Councils in the 2026 challenge.

How to get involved

1. Either download the iNaturalist app to your phone or create an account at the iNaturalist website.
2. Take photos of wild plants, fungi and animals in the Yarra Ranges area between Friday 24 April and Monday 27 April and upload them to iNaturalist; your observations will be automatically added to the project. Photos can be taken on your phone and directly uploaded via the app. Alternatively, you can take photos with a digital camera and use a computer to upload them via the website. Sound files can also be submitted - these are handy for frogs and birds if you're unable to photograph them.
