Basket trial

Container-Deposit-Scheme-Bakset-7.jpg

Council installed 100 baskets on litter bins in select parks and streets in the Yarra Ranges as part of a trial to reduce Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) recyclables going to landfill. Community members are encouraged to leave their empty eligible drink containers in one of the baskets or collect ones already there and take to them to a refund point for a 10-cent refund.

Eligible containers include glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans and liquid paper board cartons with the 10c mark on the label.

Council has partnered with Vic Return, CDS Vic Coordinator, to run the trial. The pilot trial will be reviewed after 6 months. If it proves successful, we may install more baskets throughout the municipality.

How long will the trial run?

Baskets will be installed during June and July 2025 with a review scheduled for early 2026. If the trial proves successful, we’ll be adding more baskets throughout the municipality.

Why doesn’t my local litter bin have a basket?

The trial of 100 baskets across most townships started in July 2025. We'll review the results in early 2026 and if the trial is successful, we’ll install more baskets across the municipality.
