What am I NOT allowed to return for a 10c refund?

There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund. Containers that are less than 150mL and greater than 3 litres are usually excluded.

You are NOT allowed to return:

  • Plain milk containers of all sizes, including plant-based milk substitutes.
  • Concentrated or undiluted cordial or syrup containers.
  • Wine or pure spirits bottles made of glass, including single serve formats.
  • Sachets (soft plastic or foil) above 250mL that contained wine.
  • Containers 1 litre or greater that contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water.
  • Registered health tonics, including small probiotic shots less than 150mL.
  • No container under 150ml can be redeemed.

You can still recycle many of these containers in your kerbside bin collection.

How do I prepare my containers?

Keep the label on and don't crush the container.

Scanners inside vending machines will identify the shape, label and barcode of each container to ensure it is eligible for a refund. Broken bottles, crushed cans and bottles without labels will not be eligible for a refund.

Containers must be empty

You don't have to rinse each container, but it must be empty and the outside clean enough that the barcode can be scanned by the vending machine.

Leave the lids on

They will become part of the circular economy too and will be made into new products.

Basket trial

Container-Deposit-Scheme-Bakset-7.jpg

Council has installed 100 baskets on litter bins in select parks and streets in the Yarra Ranges as part of a trial to reduce Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) recyclables going to landfill. Community members are encouraged to leave their empty eligible drink containers in one of the baskets or collect ones already there and take to them to a refund point for a 10-cent refund.

Eligible containers include glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans and liquid paper board cartons with the 10c mark on the label.

Council has partnered with Vic Return, CDS Vic Coordinator, to run the trial. The pilot trial will be reviewed after 6 months. If it proves successful, we may install more baskets throughout the municipality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do containers in the baskets belong to?

Any containers in the baskets are for anyone to take for personal use or to support fundraising efforts for your local club, school, or community group. Once collected, you can take them to a refund point to receive a 10-cent refund per container.

How long will the trial run?

Baskets will be installed during June and July 2025 with a review scheduled for early 2026. If the trial proves successful, we’ll be adding more baskets throughout the municipality.

Why doesn’t my local litter bin have a basket?

The trial of 100 baskets across most townships starts in early July 2025. We'll review the results in early 2026 and if the trial is successful, we’ll install more baskets across the municipality.

How can I get a basket on my local litter bin?

If the project is successful, we’ll consider installing more baskets in more locations. Contact us with the location of the bin you’d like to see a basket installed on and we’ll consider it should the project continue.

Can my school/community group adopt a basket to collect all the containers in it?

No, any containers in the baskets are available for anyone to take.
