Drinking in public spaces

Alcohol free zones

Consumption of alcohol is restricted in parks, roads and public spaces in and around townships. Our prescribed dry areas map (PDF, 1MB) contains a map and list of the areas which restrictions apply in.

Two different restrictions apply to certain areas:

  • Prohibition of the consumption and possession of alcohol on roads, council land and in public places at all times and all year round.
  • Prohibition of the possession and consumption of alcohol on roads, council land and in public places between the hours of 9.00pm and 10.00am the next day all year round.

Warnings and infringements can be issued by the Police, they use discretionary powers when determining if on reasonable grounds a person has contravened the law.
