Creative Communities

We are commited to strengthening current programs of significance and integrate additional forms of expression and creativity – informed by the presence of humanity’s oldest recognised continuous culture and inspired by diverse landscapes and creative expression across Yarra Ranges.

The creative heritage of Yarra Ranges is central to our identity. Moving into the future, Yarra Ranges will be recognised internationally as a place for livability, significant history, natural environment, living cultures, art, contemporary practice, talented people and creative industry opportunities.

To do this we have identified three strategic areas and developed priority actions for the next 10 years.   The plan identifies how our resources can be directed to support our vision, including strategic initiatives; policy making and programs, grants and sponsorship programs, cultural spaces and infrastructure, advocacy, direct services and regulatory functions.

The Creative Communities Strategy will guide the delivery of services and initiatives for the next ten years (2018 – 2028).

How the strategy was developed

Between August and September 2017 we undertook community engagement initiatives to hear your thoughts.

Our Creative Communities Forum attracted 180 attendees, 12 speakers and panelists which coordinated 7 interactive workshops.

The mobile Culture Bucks program went to 18 locations across Yarra Ranges, receiving feedback from 1,000 participants about their cultural priorities.

An online survey gathered feedback from 217 participants and in-depth focus groups were held with 100 people from Council’s partners and advisory committees.

 Key themes

  • Developing networks and connections
  • Facilitating co-working and collaborative spaces
  • Economic impact through creative industries
  • Supporting and encouraging leadership development.

In 2018 we incorporated feedback we gathered from our community engagement process to develop a draft Creative Communities Strategy.  We sought feedback on the draft strategy from our communities before it is finalised in 2018.
