A youth group for Monbulk teenagers will be able to run events and a camp for young people in the hills through 2019, thanks to Council’s Grants for Community.

Tribe Youth Group Monbulk launched in April, providing a weekly, independent space for teenagers aged 12-17 to play games and run activities with people their age.

President, Belinda Grooby said the group formed after trying to find a youth group in her area for her teenage daughter.

“Sport is great up in the hills, but if you want something just for your child to participate in that isn’t necessarily sports-related, there was nothing,” she said.

“We launched in April and, since then, it’s just taken off enormously. We had a number of kids that had difficulties making friends that are now forming real friendships; we had kids suffering from mental health issues that are doing a lot better, so in that respect it’s made a huge impact in Monbulk and surrounds on our youth.”

The youth group received funding through Yarra Ranges Council’s 2019 Grants for Community funding, which will help to deliver workshops, events and a camp for youth group members.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, congratulated the group for being one of 67 grant recipients awarded funding in the 2019 round.

“This year Council is distributing $424,916 to inspire community development, support festivals and events right across Yarra Ranges and celebrate our creative communities,” Cr Stevenson said.

“Supporting Tribe Youth Group aligns with our Health and Wellbeing Strategy and its goal of ensuring every child and young person can thrive and reach their potential.

“Having a supportive environment for young people to meet new friends, hang out and be themselves close to home and in a safe environment is vital and I’m proud we are able to support the great initiative shown by Tribe in Monbulk.”

Ms Grooby said that Tribe Kids, a group specifically for children aged 8-12, would launch in 2019.

Council announced its 2019 Grants for Community recipients on Tuesday, 13 November. For more information, visit Council's Grants page.
