Welcoming picnic for new Upper Yarra families

News update published on 21 March 2017

A free twilight picnic will be held for Upper Yarra families on 24 March.

Families in the Upper Yarra are invited to a free twilight picnic to be held on Friday, 24 March, at the Warburton Waterwheel’s Outdoor Space.

The free family event is supported by Yarra Ranges Council Linking Learning program and the Let’s Talk about Warby Project.

The Linking Learning program is focused on supporting parents and carers to “Sing! Talk! Play! Every Day!” with their young children.

Parents can help their children to learn language skills by interacting with them in everyday life. The picnic is a great opportunity for families in the Upper Yarra to connect with their children to support their language development.

The “Let’s Talk about Warby” project aims to improve outcomes for young children in the Upper Yarra area. Yarra Ranges Council received responses from more than 150 parents and carers at 30 local events and through an online survey, about services and support families needed to raise young children (aged 0-5) in the Warburton to Reefton area.

The council is developing an Action Plan, a local leadership group and a Yarra Ranges Council working group to address the needs raised by the community in the survey.

O’Shannassy Ward Councillor Jim Child said the picnic would be a chance for both new and existing  residents to meet other families, as well as get to know their local services and schools.

“For parents starting out in a new area, it can be hard to know where to go and who to call for services,” Cr Child said.

“The Waterwheel is an icon in the town, and a go-to for residents and visitors who want to know what’s happening in Warburton. Strong communities are made of strong networks and this picnic is the perfect chance to build those connections and get introduced to the town.”

A puppet show and magician performance will be held at the picnic, as well as face painting and children’s activities.

A free barbecue, fruit ice-cream, pancakes n strawberries and vegetarian meals will be available. Local community services, schools and preschools will have information stalls and activities.

The picnic is a Rewards Event for Linking Learning families, and spot prizes will be given out for children wearing Linking Learning hats. Parents with Linking Learning reward cards bring along your card for a stamp - you may be ready for a prize.

The event will run from 4pm-7pm and will be cancelled in the event of a Fire Danger Rating of Severe or above.

The Warburton Waterwheel Outdoor Space is an accessible venue.
