Council is asking school communities to take part in a 12-week program that encourages children to walk to school.

Free Range Kids is a Yarra Ranges Council initiative in partnership with Inspiro Community Health that aims to increase children’s daily activity levels as well as their ability to travel independently within their community.

Free Range Kids is a class based program that is simple to run, will engage children’s sense of fun and adventure, increase their physical activity and support them to develop resilience, independence, self-confidence and social skills.

The program will operate in term 3 and 4 and will run for 12 weeks beginning Monday 6 August through to Friday 26 October.

Council is asking school communities to initially discuss the program with their schools, encouraging them to submit an expression of interest form by Wednesday, 30 May.

The forms have been emailed to schools around the Yarra Ranges.

If selected, schools would need to provide the following:

  • A program champion (such as a teacher, parent or school community member) who will coordinate and drive the project with support of Yarra Ranges Council and Inspiro Health Promotion Officers.
  • Access by YRC and Inspiro to:
    • promote the program to the school community
    • evaluate the program with participating children, parents and teachers.
  • Agreement to share the research publicly.

Please contact Health Promotion Officer, Jacinda Erich, if you have any questions or concerns.
