2009 Victorian Bushfires 10 year commemoration

Yarra Ranges Council will be hosting an event at McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires on Thursday, 7 February, starting at 5.30pm.

Residents, emergency services workers and friends and family of those affected by the bushfires are welcome to attend the reserve for a short program of speeches and performances, including Dixons Creek Primary School and the Badger Creek Women’s Choir.

Refreshments and ice cream will be available at the event, and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic.

The Yarra Glen and District Men's Shed will host a sausage sizzle at the event, for a gold coin donation, which will go to local CFA brigades.

In the event of rainy weather, the event will be relocated indoors to the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall.

In the event of a Fire Danger Rating of Extreme or higher, the event will be cancelled.

Support information

The 2009 Victorian Bushfires is one of the most significant natural disasters Victoria has experienced.

This period is a time to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in the bushfires, and learn about how the fires changed the lives of many, and how communities have rebuilt.

Anyone who is experiencing stress during this time is encouraged to speak to friends, family and co-workers, a mental health professional or to call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

People should seek professional help from a mental health professional in the lead up to, and during the anniversary period if they:

- are feeling overwhelmed and are unable to handle any intense feelings or physical sensations

- have physical stress symptoms

- are re-experiencing vivid flashbacks of the event and are becoming extremely distressed

- find that relationships with family and friends are suffering

- are becoming accident-prone and using more alcohol or drugs

- are experiencing other significant changes in their behaviour that would not normally occur.

People should also be aware of anyone in their personal or professional lives experiencing the above symptoms during this period.

The Victorian Government's Better Health Channel has produced a podcast with trauma experts, Dr Rob Gordon and Anne Leadbeater OAM, about the impact of trauma and how to help others with recovery, in the context of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires.
