Expressions of Interest for social enterprises - Montrose former MCH Building

Submissions close at 05:00PM on Tuesday, 13 November 2018

Social enterprises around Victoria are being sought to occupy the former Montrose Maternal and Child Health building, following a resolution by Councillors to keep the building open.

Council is running an Expressions of Interest process from Tuesday, 16 October to 5pm on Tuesday, 13 November for groups wanting to occupy the former MCH building at 4 Leith Road, Montrose.

Yarra Ranges Mayor and Walling Ward Councillor, Len Cox, encouraged enterprises from the Yarra Ranges and beyond to stick their hand up for the site.

“We have some amazing social enterprises around the Yarra Ranges, but some of them find it hard to find a permanent home, let alone one that works within their budget,” Cr Cox said.

“The former MCH building in Montrose has a strong history in the area, but it has sadly sat unoccupied for a number of years.

“This EOI process is a great opportunity for a social enterprise to gain a foothold by having a building to work from, whether they are local or looking to move into the Yarra Ranges.”

Key characteristics of social enterprises are that they:

•         Are expressly driven by a public or community cause, be it economic, social, cultural, or environmental;

•         Trade to fulfil their community benefit mission;

•         Derive most of their income from trade, not through donations or grants;

•         Use the majority (at least 50%) of their profits to work towards their social mission.

On Tuesday, 14 August, Council resolved to identify community interest in occupying the building for social enterprise activities.
