Join us for a special screening of RIVER as part of the Yarra Riverkeeper Association (YRKA) 'Riverfest' celebrations running from 1st September to the 22nd September.

A profound cinematic and musical reflection on how rivers have shaped both the planet’s elaborate landscapes and all human existence.

Throughout history, rivers have shaped our landscapes and our journeys; flowed through our cultures and dreams. River takes its audience on a journey through space and time; spanning six continents, and drawing on extraordinary contemporary cinematography, including satellite filming, the film shows rivers on scales and from perspectives never seen before. Its union of image, music and sparse, poetic script create a film that is both dream-like and powerful, honouring the wildness of rivers but also recognising their vulnerability.

River is the sequel to the 2017 hit documentary Mountain, reuniting the creative team of director Jennifer Peedom, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, narrator Willem Dafoe and writer Robert Macfarlane.

Pre-screening

Prior to the feature documentary, there will be a screening of the short Documentary film, "The Land Speaks"

This is a short film, focusing on friends Pairrebeene/Trawlwoolway artist Lisa Kennedy and Environmentalist/Educator Bryan Watterson as they unpack their feelings of personal, environmental, creative, cultural, and familial connection evoked from their property in Toora, South Gippsland which they have been listening to and returning to a state of biodiversity for the past 20 years.

Once desolate, the Land now thrives with 66,000 trees, an Indigenous-led Community Sculpture Circle, and the return of wildlife to the area. Bryan and Lisa, once considered unconventional for their environmental focus in a traditional farming community, are seen as inspirations.

At its core, it is a personal story of two people of incredible grit who sold their house to buy a block of land and then listened to it deeply. It is about the cruciality of connection in its various forms, and its power to positively affect people and thus the planet.
