March-May Tour Theme: Handmade Objects
The Yarra Ranges has a rich history of craft and DIY makers, this tour focuses on some handmade items in our local history exhibition Connections, including an amazing embroidery by Dame Nellie Melba.
The tour also includes a short curator’s talk about our temporary exhibition Taking the time: handmade objects from the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum collection, which presents inspiring, important and quirky objects that were made with skills that are rare today. The exhibition features textiles, woodwork, First Nations weaving, and other objects made for relaxation and solace, to reclaim culture, to gain independence or to connect with others in times of trouble. Discover the ingenuity and skill of makers past and present, steeped in respect for the unique natural environment of the Yarra Ranges.
The tour will also cover the museum building and collections and includes a back of house tour of the onsite store, where some collection items are held for processing.
