Yarra Ranges Council is partnering with Cire Training to deliver the Hospitality Jump Start for Jobs - Front of House Skills training course to support our local job seekers learn skills and find jobs in our hospitality and tourism businesses.

With this course you will understand the expectations of working in the hospitality industry and learn basic terminology, basic barista skills, how to make a coffee and how coffee machines work. You will also learn customer service skills such as greeting and serving customers and taking and preparing orders.

About the Course  

This is a face-to-face course at one of Cire’s campuses. To make the course available to more people across Yarra Ranges, we offer courses in various locations and during school holidays.

 Jobs and Pathways

You could apply for jobs as a barista, bar or wait staff in café’s, restaurants or catering venues serving food and beverages. The course could lead you to other short or fulltime hospitality courses offered at TAFEs or Learn Locals.

Course Content

The course is run over four days; three days of course work, and one day of work experience at a pop-up café.

 SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices in food safety  Learn skills and knowledge required to use personal hygiene practices to prevent contamination of food that might cause   food-borne illnesses. It requires the ability to follow predetermined organisational procedures and to identify and control food hazards.
 RSA  Responsible Service of Alcohol


Learn skills and knowledge required for the responsible service of alcohol under State/Territory legislation.
   Barista Training  

Learn how to use, clean and maintain a coffee machine. Learn how to froth milk, and make a variety of coffees.

  Food and Beverage Skills Learn basic terminology, and basic food preparation and delivery.
  Customer Service Skills Greeting customers, taking orders and general customer service skills. 
    Hospitality tips and tricks for gaining employment

Application Information 

Who can apply

You have a connection with the Yarra Ranges area e.g. live, work or study,  be interested in working in the local hospitality and tourism industry and have little or no previous experience. We encourage young people to apply and jump start their hospitality career.

How to register your interest and go on the waiting list for future courses

  • You will receive a confirmation email with your registration details and a link to the Cire Training enrolment page
  • You will be contacted by the Cire Program Coordinator to confirm new dates when they are released and answer any questions.

Cire regularly host pop-up cafes and community meals helping to make connections with the community and assist our students in real life experiences. Cire have invested in a commercial training specific kitchen located in Yarra Junction, adding to our large commercial kitchen at the Chirnside Park Community Hub.
