This concert is presented by Yarra Ranges Council, curated by Melbourne Recital Centre, with support from Dr Geraldine Lazarus and Mr Greig Gailey.

Ensemble 642 specialises in repertoire from the age of basso continuo (late 16th – early 18th centuries). Early harps virtuoso Hannah Lane has been called one of the finest ‘early music’ performers in Australia. The ensemble is united by their passion for the art of continuo and a lively interest in improvisation and musical experimentation based on historical sources.

The numbers ‘642’ denote a shorthand used in basso continuo practice to indicate the notes to be played above the bass line. This particular combination of pitches creates a crunchy and dissonant harmony that was prevalent in the music of the 17th and 18th centuries.
