The Australian Tax Office are running the following workshops for businesses within the Melbourne East region. Session topics cover both general and industry-specific areas of tax obligations. Each online session runs for approximately 45 to 60 minutes and are hosted by Melbourne East Local Councils

 These sessions are of interest if you:

  • are starting a new business or just thinking about starting one
  • want to update your knowledge
  • work in any of the industry-specific areas advertised
  • closing your business

  • Introduction to business record  - Monday 12th April 10am - 11am Are you planning to start or have just started a new business? This 60 minute introductory session will provide information about which business records to keep, the legal requirements, how long to keep your records and why keeping good records is so important. This is a basic session that also introduces the benefits of developing good record keeping habits as well as the tools that assist in managing your records.


  • Cash flow for small business success - Thursday 29th April 10am - 11am This 60 minute session will provide critical knowledge and cash flow management skills. Gain insights into how to identify issues and use a range of tips to help maximise cash flow. By attending this virtual session, it will help you improve your cash flow management by mapping cash flow in and out of your business, analysing and tracking your cash flow and monitoring your cashflow by using the seven tips to maximise cash flow. There will be plenty of opportunities along the way to ask questions.


  • Digital options for your small business - Thursday 13th May 10am - 11am As a small business owner, are you aware of the vast range of online services and digital systems that can help you performs your business activities, such as marketing, sales, accounting and reporting? This online 60 minute session will provide insights into the benefits you can get from digital systems and what systems are available for each area of your business operations.


  • Running a Home Based Business - Monday 24th May 10am - 11am  Are you a home based business and wondering what expenses you may be able claim? This 60 minute session will provide insights into what expenses like electricity, cars, gas and phone, can you claim for tax deductions and how to calculate the amounts that you can claim.


  • Starting a small business - Monday 7th June 10am - 11am Are you thinking of starting a small business? Maybe you have a hobby that is becoming a business?
    This FREE 40 minute session will help you understand:
     the difference between a hobby and a business
     what to do if your hobby turns into a business
     the most common business structures and the registrations you may need to be in business.
    Getting it right is important so come along, ask questions and give your business the best chance of success.
