Message from the Mayor - circuit-breaker restrictions

I know that the next week will be difficult for us as individuals and as a community, but I also know we’ll work hard to get through it as we have before – surrounded by a community that cares and looks after each other.

All of us have had to make some quick changes to our day-to-day lives, through the closure of schools, returning to work from home or, for some of us, the prospect of a week suddenly without work.

Already I am hearing stories of great kindness, care and checking in others. It seems that this lock down is affecting people very differently and those who were really resilient last time might not be feeling that way this week. I know we will all keep doing what we have done and reaching out to check and have a chat. Thank you to everyone – this makes these times so much easier.

And remember to look after yourselves and ask for help if you need it. It’s natural to be feeling upset, anxious or uncertain during this time. If you’re not feeling ok, please reach out and say something – to your friends, loved ones, or to your GP. No-one should feel they have to cope on their own.

Along with many, many businesses who are doing it tough, our hospitality businesses are struggling - the sudden switch to takeaway only will have an impact on businesses already stocked for a weekend busy with tourists.

If you can afford it, please support your local cafes and restaurants by getting takeaway and treat yourself to some of the spectacular food and coffee our area has to offer.

The 5km travel distance will be tough for all of us to stay social, but make the most of the outdoor spaces around you – trails, ovals or interesting spaces. You can also exercise with someone not from your home within the 5km limit for up to two hours, any time of the day or night.

Mask wearing is back in all places outside your home – including when exercising outdoors and when in any indoor setting - so make sure to bring a mask with you wherever you go.

Lastly, of course, is to make sure you continue checking in with a QR code whenever you enter any business or venue. Checking in is crucial for quick contact tracing if someone is exposed to COVID-19, and time is of the essence as the outbreak is managed from here.

If you’re feeling unwell, need to get tested or are looking for where to get vaccinated then go to coronavirus.vic.gov.au

Most of all, stay safe and please call us on 1300 368 333 if there’s any help the Yarra Ranges Council team can provide including answering questions you have to help you find the right support you need.
