Council will be winding up remaining temporary outdoor dining sites at the end of June, returning the sites to car parking for the community.

Over the pandemic, Council issued an additional 40 permits to businesses, for temporary outdoor dining - to allow for socially-distant meeting and dining. This includes 14 sites using carparks.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Jim Child, said the outdoor dining provided vital extra seats when tourism returned to the region.

“When people returned to the Yarra Ranges, business capacity limits meant that we needed more socially-distant places for people to meet, sit and eat,” he said.”

“We helped to establish temporary outdoor dining in spaces like carparks, laneways, nature strips and other shared community spaces.

“With capacity limits gone and high tourism traffic, we’ll be removing all temporary carpark dining sites, returning the area to how it was. This will provide better car parking options for residents and visitors visiting our 55 towns, and reflects the post-restrictions period we now live in.”

Cr Child said that Council had received very positive feedback about the temporary spaces and will use this to plan future programs.

“We know that some members of the community will wish these spaces could stay,” Cr Child said.

“They served a fantastic purpose, and our teams will be looking at how we can use similar concepts in the future to activate spaces in our towns.

“The community spaces we set up over the last two years – such as the Healesville space outside of The Memo – will remain unchanged, and we’ll be looking about where we can move our parklets to get the best result for our community and our businesses.”

Footpath dining will continue, with existing permits needing to be renewed by businesses. Business owners have been notified in writing of their permit renewal, and Council’s Business Development Team can talk through what the changes will mean.

This permit renewal will be free-of-charge for businesses until October, 2022, and can be applied for online here.
