Voting

In Victoria voting is compulsory and you may be fined if you do not vote.

You must vote in the election of the municipality (council or shire) of your main place of residence.  In addition, you can also choose to vote in relation to property you own in another municipality.

You are only entitled to one vote in any single municipality. If you own multiple properties in Yarra Ranges, you are entitled to vote in respect of only one property and this is determined by Council unless application is made to Council to specify a particular property.

To be eligible to vote in the Council elections in October 2020, you must be enrolled by 4.00pm on Friday 28 August 2020.

How do I vote in the Council elections?

Council elections in October 2020 will be conducted by postal voting only.

The VEC will mail ballot packs to all enrolled voters in contested elections between 6 and 8 October 2020.

You will need to carefully follow the included instructions on how to vote correctly and then mail back your completed ballot material using the reply-paid envelope as soon as possible but before 6.00 pm Friday 23 October 2020.

Making it easier to remember to vote

The VEC is encouraging voters to subscribe to its free notification service, VoterAlert, which will send reminders to either your mobile phone or email about important dates during the Council elections.
