    In 2016 we surveyed the Lilydale community to find out how they felt about the look and feel of their township. They gave an average score of 59/100.

    Project 3 - Maroondah Highway and Main Street upgrade

    The Maroondah Highway and Main Street upgrade is just one idea to renew and encourage future growth in Lilydale.

    - Traffic delays and congestion

    - Poor pedestrian and driver safety

    - Pleasant tree canopy - Acts as a barrier through town

    - Confusing service road arrangements

    - Focus for trading activity and passing trade

    - Historic centre of town

    - Good parking and access

    Future opportunities

    - Increase east bound lanes from 1 to 2 from Victoria Road to Railway line

    - Converting of slip lanes to traffic lanes with on street parallel parking on both sides

    - Creation of wide central green spine including bike path where existing Highway lanes are located

    - New traffic signals at Cave Hill Road and Hutchinson Street and rationalisation of pedestrian operated signals

     

    How it will benefit the community

    - Improved safety for pedestrians, shoppers, drivers, and public transport users

    - No net loss of parking or street trees and planting of new street trees

    - Increased ease of pedestrian crossing through ability to prop in the central green spine

    - Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion

    - Creation of a new sense of place between Cave Hill Road and Anderson Street

    - Limited mid-block pedestrian connections

    - Strong east/west movement and limited north/south desire lines

    - Aligns with Melba Park, Post Office, Civic Centre and Lillydale Lake

    - Historic centre of town

    - Good parking and access

    - High and low side of Main St are disconnected

    - Lack of concentrated activity in a wide Main St

    - Lack of multi-use civic space

    - Very wide road reserve (60m)

    - Signs of decay and neglect (White Dog Lilydale Hotel)
