WHAT THE SHIRE OF YARRA RANGES IS DOING ABOUT IT!
Climate change or global warming is no longer the stuff of fiction – it is very real and it is happening now! The Shire of Yarra Ranges Council believes that climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing this and future generations.
At its Tuesday March 13 Council Meeting the Shire of Yarra Ranges took a giant step in the challenge to combat global warming by formally adopting a range of innovative measures to help preserve our planet.
| These initiatives include:
• Adopting a climate change commitment that includes striving to exceed Kyoto Protocol targets
• Becoming a carbon neutral organisation, by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to a level 30 percent below our 2000 levels by the year 2010, purchasing renewable energy certificates to offset emissions associated with street lighting and council buildings, offsetting council fleet emissions by planting 60,000 trees and progressively reducing our energy consumption.
• In order to provide an accurate assessment of the condition of the Yarra Ranges environment we will produce a State of the Environment Report. • We will establish a Sustainable Business Forum to support and encourage more sustainable business practices. • We will establish a local expert panel to advise us on how to achieve further greenhouse gas reductions from Council buildings.
| • AND we will play a lead role in lobbying the Federal and State governments for greater progress on policies and programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions beyond the Kyoto Protocol targets.
These bold actions put the Shire of Yarra Ranges at the forefront of Australian councils in tackling climate change.
