Lillydale or Lilydale?

When the Shire of Lillydale was first established, it was named after a popular song called Lilly Dale or Lillydale.  Many years later, the Police-Magistrate Panton published a letter that said the town was named after Lily de Castella, the wife of Paul de Castella who lived in Yering.  This is where the two spellings of the word probably originated.

In a compromise, the town came to be spelled with one "L" and the former Shire of Lilllydale was spelled with two "L"s.  The Museum was named after the Shire, so it is also spelled with two "L"s.

You can read more about the details of how Lilydale was named by purchasing The Naming of Lilydale from the Museum Book Shop.
