David Mitchell: Man of Stone

A builder by trade, David Mitchell was known as the father of the Royal Exhibition Building.  He was also Dame Nellie Melba's father. A portrait of David Mitchell with Melba is available from our Photographic Service.

The Mitchell's Cave Hill Quarry, which has been operating since 1878, was owned by David Mitchell.  The quarry is depicted  in a painting by Sir Arthur Streeton.  Titled "Mitchell's lime quarry" , the painting was finished in 1935.  It was formally donated to the Museum by Mr Tom Cutbush, the Managing Director of Unimin Australia Ltd (UAL) on the 4th April 2003.

The David Mitchell: Man of Stone exhibition is currently in the upstairs gallery of the Museum.

For more about David Mitchell, you can purchase David Mitchell: A Forfar Man by Pamela Vestey from the Museum Book Shop.
