After the birth

Going Home from Hospital

If you have your baby at a public hospital, you will be visited by a midwife when you get home.  The midwife will be able to help with any problems you may encounter when you get home.  Breastfeeding, unsettled baby, sleep/settling concerns with your baby.  These visits are free.

When your baby is about 1 week old, the Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCH Nurse) will visit you instead of the midwife.  The MCH Nurse will do a home visit and if you are able to travel to the MCH Centre, you will see her at the centre.  She will monitor your baby’s growth and development until he/she goes to school.  This is also a free service.

Talk to your MCH Nurse if you have special needs or are unable to attend the MCH Centre - they will be able to help.

Registration of birth

When a baby is born, it has to be registered within 60 days. If the parents are not married, the father’s name can only appear on the birth certificate if:

  • Both parents sign the registration

  • The mother agrees that the father is to be registered, or

  • The court decides who the father is (via statutory declaration or DNA testing).
