What about pregnancy testing?

So you think you might be pregnant? Don’t sit there worrying about it – a pregnancy test is a quick and simple way to find out for sure.

Home pregnancy testing kits: Chemists and supermarkets stock home pregnancy kits that detect the pregnancy hormones in your urine.  These can be used as early as two days after your missed period.  They are very accurate but you must follow the instructions carefully.  The best time to do a home pregnancy test is first thing in the morning.  The tests vary in price but are equally effective.  If your test is positive, you need to see your doctor ASAP.  If you have a negative result and are still worried, see your doctor.

Community health centres (Yarra Valley and Ranges):
Community health nurses offer urine pregnancy tests.  They also provide advice about your options and can direct you to other services.

Doctor clinics:
Your doctor can confirm your pregnancy by both urine and blood tests. Blood tests can detect pregnancy within a week of conception.  Your doctor can also talk to you confidentially about your options.

School nurses
may offer pregnancy testing and advice and may direct you to other services if you need them.
