Antenatal classes

Antenatal classes help prepare you and your partner or support people for the experience of childbirth.  They are a great opportunity to learn about what happens during childbirth so that you are well prepared.  They are also a great opportunity to learn new skills and meet people who are going through a similar experience.  The classes are offered at hospitals and community health centres.  Specific classes for young mums are also available.  Enquire on your first visit to the midwife, doctor or hospital.

Topics generally discussed during antenatal classes include:

  • General health and well being of both mother and baby during pregnancy and in the first few weeks following the birth

  • Diet during pregnancy and breast feeding

  • Exercise

  • Your changing body

  • The developing baby during pregnancy

  • Things to be avoided during pregnancy – eg smoking, drugs and alcohol

  • The process of labour

  • Signs that you are in labour

  • When to ring the hospital

  • Early days at home with your baby

  • How are you going to feed your baby – Breast or bottle?

  • Caring for your baby in the early weeks

  • Child safety – SIDS and Kids, Child restraints
