Education

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum offers a range of educational experiences for students from early childhood programs through to tertiary level. Options include teacher-led tours as well as museum-facilitated activities. See the table below for an outline of regular programs and download our Education Brochure PDF in the right hand column of this page.

Gumnuts Story time and Craft (3-5 years)

Story Time on first Tuesday of the month based on a monthly theme that ties in with Core Exhibition

Craft Activity on third Tuesday of the month based on a monthly theme that ties in with Core Exhibition

Each session involves visiting the exhibition and looking at key objects

(Years 1 and 2)

Object Huntthrough the Museum – teachers supervise students as they search for objects and learn about the past in the Core Exhibition

Free – self guided

Time for delivery:

15 – 20 minutes

Handling Session using a variety of household objects with a few mystery objects, students are guided through using evidence to work out how objects were used. Each student wears white cotton gloves and is taught how to handle the objects.

Our Landscape

(Years 3 and 4)

Activity Trail through the Museum – teachers supervise students as they use a grid reference to locate and record information about key objects in  the Core Exhibition

Free – self guided

Time for delivery:

25 – 30 minutes

Edith’s Lyrebird involves students watching a short film about James the Lyrebird followed by a craft session constructing felt Lyrebird Finger puppets.

30 - 45 minutes

Home Remedies uses simple recipes from the Green and Gold Cookery Book, students mix up some home remedies for curious ailments such as a ‘bilious attack’ or sprained ankle.

Time Traveller Outreach Program

(Years 3-7)

Time Traveller is a Chronology Game where students examine ‘boxes of evidence’ categorised by decade and then sequence their objects on a room sized timeline.

$100 for half day visit to school

Perspectives

(Years 9-10)

Activity Trail through the Museum – teachers supervise students as they search for objects, record significant information and make valid inferences from the Core Exhibition.

30 - 45 minutes

Migrants, Soldiers, Coranderrk has students applying their historiographical skills in analysing a range of sources in relation to one of the above topics. Working in groups, they come to understand the variety of perspectives people in the community held regarding each of these themes.
