Common Name: Tall Rush
Synonym:
Family: Juncaceae
Size: 1-2.5m x 0.6-1.5m
Description: Dense, robust tufted perennial rush spreading from underground stems. Erect dull to light green stems to 10mm diam. with crowded ridges. Pith almost hollow, large air spaces, stems split easily.
Leaves: Leaves reduced to broad, loose pale brown basal sheathes to 40cm.
Flowering: Compact flowerhead of single, scattered or clustered flowers; 3 stamens. Main bract continues above flowers for 30cm. Capsules reddish-brown, flattened top, as long or longer than flowers.
Flower Colour: Straw-coloured
Flowering Time: October to December
Growing Conditions: Semi-aquatic, in wet soil on margins of water areas or poorly drained soils within riparian forests. Semi shade to dappled shade.
Garden Use: Plant in or beside water areas. Useful for filtering water.
