Common Name: Leafy Flat-sedge

Size: 0.6-1.5m high
Description: Densely tufted perennial herb spreading from short thick underground stems. Flowering stems rigid, triangular. 5-10 bracts at base of flowerhead, 5-15cm long.
Leaves: Shiny dark green flat or channelled leaves, strongly partitioned within, as long or longer than stems, 5-40mm wide.
Flowering: Branched flowerhead with 6-10 primary branches to 20cm long, divided into dense, oval to cylindric spikes 1-3cm long. Many rounded or flattened 4-10-flowered spikelets; stem within spikelet broadly winged.
Flower Colour: Brown to coppery
Flowering Time: October to February
Growing Conditions: Moist swampy soils and edges of streams which may dry out in summer. Full sun, semi shade to full shade.
Garden Use: A spreading sedge for low moist sites in gardens and beside water areas.
