Common Name: Slender Twig-sedge

Size: 0.3-1m high
Description: Slender tufted perennial sedge spreading from very short underground stems. Stiff erect flowering stems are ridged, round in cross section to 1.5mm wide, nodeless.
Leaves: Basal leaves only, similar to stems in size and shape, or reduced to sheaths; sheath dull, reddish or straw-coloured.
Flowering: Erect, oblong flowerhead 4-30cm long, few 1-flowered spikelets scattered along branches. Bract at base of flowerhead shorter than flowerhead. Nut to 3.6mm, shiny, yellow-brown to black, round.
Flower Colour: Red-brown to greyish
Flowering Time: September to March
Growing Conditions: Moist to wet soils in swamps and heathy woodland. Full sun, semi shade.
Garden Use: Useful in permanently moist areas, bog gardens, beside ponds and in water run-off areas.
