Systemic Advocacy Course
Are you interested in supporting your community to be a better place for people with disabilities?
Yarra Ranges Council is hosting a FREE systemic advocacy course for Yarra Ranges residents with a disability or a carer of a person with a disability.
The course, commencing in February 2012 and facilitated by Dr George Taleporos, supports participants to develop their understanding of advocacy principles and strategies for change.
What is systemic advocacy?
Systemic advocacy is about social change. It may involve changing:
- social attitudes
- social mores (conventions about behaviour)
- legislation
- policy
- procedures (the steps by which policy is carried out)
- structures (for example, committees, departments, agency structures)
These things might be considered 'targets' for systemic advocacy.
The changes may be designed to:
- enhance access to resources
- enable people to exercise their rights
- increase participation in establishing or amending legislation, policies, procedures, structures, or processes.
Course topics covered include:
• legal and human rights legislation
• skills for planning, developing and undertaking successful systemic advocacy campaigns
