New signs

You can request a new sign to assist with traffic management, such as parking restrictions, safety and warnings. Our Traffic Engineering unit will assess each request in partnership with VicRoads to determine if signs are needed.

Sign maintenance

Council regularly inspects and carries out maintenance on signs, including safety, advisory, directional and street name signs. You can report damaged signs or signs in need of other maintenance to us by calling 1300 368 333 or email us.

Tourism Signs

As Yarra Ranges is a popular tourist destination it's important for appropriate directional signage to be placed around the municipality. Businesses in Yarra Ranges can apply to have directional signs placed on roads throughout the area. Our Infrastructure Services team manage the installation of these signs in conjunction with VicRoads.

It is important to remember that your business will not necessarily flourish just on the back of a road sign. Also, the nature of your business and its location will determine the type of sign you are eligible for.

An integrated approach to your marketing is recommended, utilising a range of promotional tools best able to reach your target market, so a well constructed Marketing Plan is essential. Signage will be just one part of that plan. Remember, research shows that 82% of tourists already plan their trip before they leave home and that the purpose of the road sign is to assist them find their desired destination.

To make an application for a sign on council maintained roads please complete the attached Application for Signage on Council Roads and submit it to council with the $90 administration fee. The application will not be processed until the administration fee has been paid.

Applications for signage on VicRoads maintained roads (main/arterial roads) will be referred to VicRoads consideration (see Yarra Ranges Council's web page Roads Managed by Vic Roads  to check if the road you are referring to is a main road).

VicRoads have two categories for signage; Tourist Attraction and Tourist Accommodation Business. The application forms can be found in the related documents to the side of this page.

Applications for consideration by VicRoads can be made by completing the appropriate form and returning it, along with the $90 application fee, to council.

All applications and application fees should be returned to a Yarra Ranges Council Community Link.
