Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When can I burn off?
Yarra Ranges is divided into three areas; Urban, Residential Bushland and Rural under the Open Air Burning Local Law 2007. The Local Law was revised in 2008 to:
- control the use of open-air burning
- encourage alternative disposal and recycling
- minimise the nuisance caused by smoke
- allow burning for the purpose of fuel reduction for fire prevention purposes
Whether you can burn in the open air depends on the time of year (eg no burning permitted during the CFA declared fire danger period) and whether you property is classified as urban, bushland residential or rural under the local law. For each area there are also specific guidelines and restrictions you need to follow. The Open Air Burning Guide contains all the information you need to know before burning off in Yarra Ranges.
