The Shire has many businesses operating from home, in sectors such as finance, event management, the arts, accommodation, massage, health and well-being, and many more.
A home based business is any business operated at, or from, a residential address by a person who lives at that residential address.
The majority of small businesses in Victoria are home based, and the number of home based businesses is increasing.
The Shire supports home based business and offers workshops such as "Getting Started in Small or Home Based Business" and many others throughout the year.
In 2006 the Shire surveyed over 1,500 home based businesses. For information on the survey, click on the link at the bottom of the page.

| Budget Accommodation | | Prospectus - Development Opportunities for Extra Budget Accommodation in the Yarra Valley
The data provided in the prospectus information sheet is sourced from a report commissioned by the Centre for Agriculture and Business – Yarra Valley Inc. titled “Budget Accommodation and Transport for Seasonal Workers in the Yarra Valley”1, conducted by Meinhardt Infrastructure and Environment Pty Ltd. This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that lack of budget accommodation was restricting the supply of seasonal labour to the horticultural industries in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. A focus of the project was the role of backpackers and other transient workers in the horticultural industry and their particular accommodation and transport requirements.
This information sheet provides data on the: · scope and size of the horticultural industries in the Shire of Yarra Ranges; · demand for labour by industry and month, and the source of this labour; · accommodation supply, and apparent shortfall; and · options for meeting this shortfall, and opportunities for investors and developers in this field.
