The Shire, in partnership with the community, aims to protect and enhance Yarra Ranges' natural environment.

In 2007 a series of monthly fact sheets were developed with the aim to raise staff and community awareness about key environmental issues faced in Yarra Ranges. View 11 fact sheets in series.

THEMES       
Bushfire   Links to a range of fact sheets and webpages on environmental issues after bushfire. Including Gregory Moores article - Nature's Renewal and the Rebirth of a Garden.     
Advocacy & Issues   The Environment Department regularly respond to State and Federal issues through submissions and advocacy campaigns on behalf of Council and the Community. View current submissions on: Sugarloaf Pipeline.    
Key Documents   The Shire of Yarra Ranges Environment Strategy, State of Environment Report and Environmental Initiatives Report. A limited number of hard copies are available upon request.     
Community Programs and Events   Weedbusters Week, Weed Wipeout (weed disposal) and the Ribbons of Green (indigenous planting) programs.    
Volunteer Groups   Lists of Landcare and Friends of groups already formed, how to get involved or create a new group to help protect biodiversity on public and/or private land.    
Education   The free '"Learning for Sustainability" program to assist shire schools incorporate more sustainable practices, incursions, excursions to Birdsland Environmental Education Centre in Belgrave South AND 'Earthkeepers' overnight excursions to Mt Toolebewong (near Healesville).     
Organisational Resource Management   Council initiatives to reduce energy and water consumption, improve water quality, sustainable purchase of materials and waste reduction. The Shire of Yarra Ranges Resource Management Strategy 2007 - 2010 provides a framework to reduce our impacts on the natural environment and to support our community to lighten its footprint. Eco Leaders are staff volunteers dedicated to assisting these outcomes.    
Greener Living    Tips and hints for lifestyle changes for your home, at work/school or within your community to help become more sustainable. Including a list of service providers who can help with home assessments and audits. Plus Green Loans, a new Australian Government initiative to help Australians tackle climate change.     
Sustainable Gardening   Consult our Landscape Guidelines or Ecological Consultants list for advice on developing landscape plans, download the sustainable garden audit or purchase a copy of the Sustainable Gardening Booklet for detailed information on environmentally friendly gardening. - Available now for $4    
Indigenous Vegetation   Indigenous vegetation in the Shire, including bushland management, living in harmony with indigenous vegetation, tree health and risk of bushfire, vegetation removal queries, and Environmental Code of Practice.    
Weeds   Identification, removal and disposal techniques of environmental weeds in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The Weed Management Strategy guides Shire direction in weed management.     
Yarra Ranges Plant Directory   A fantastic online database to assist with identification and provide information about indigenous plants and problematic weeds in the shire.    
Wildlife   Lists of wildlife found in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Living with wildlife and threats to their survival.    
Water   Water conservation, stormwater, rivers and creeks, grey water, wastewater and septic systems in the Shire of Yarra Ranges.    
Roadside signage   Environmental roadside signs seen around the Shire of Yarra Ranges.    
YREAC   Newly established in 2009 - The Yarra Ranges Environmental Advisory Committee (YREAC) consists of key community and agency stakeholders to provide constructive input on sustainability issues and initiatives.
