| Heritage in the Shire of Yarra Ranges generally reflects the history of European contact and settlement since the late 1830's, represented by a diversity of building styles, materials and types of structures.
There are also tangible elements to connect us with the lives of the Bunurrong and Wawurrong people and the traditional Wurundjeri - Balluk territory.
The objectives of heritage conservation in Yarra Ranges are to promote, understand and conserve the built and cultural heritage of the Shire, based on the principles established by the Burra Charter in 1979 as the standard for best practice heritage conservation in Australia.
The Shire of Yarra Ranges Heritage Study 2000 identified, assessed and documented some 280 places of cultural significance within the municipality.
There is a further Shire Heritage list of over 1,000 nominated places drawn from submissions by groups and individuals and from previous reports and surveys. Some of these places will be further researched and assessed in the future, others are already protected in the Planning Scheme. | |
