| | Common Name: | Swamp Lily | | Family: | Hydrocharitaceae | | Size: | leaf stalks to 60cm long | | Description: | Emergent, floating perennial herb. | | Leaves: | Mid-green elliptic to egg-shaped leaves 2-16cm long with 5-7 longitudinal veins, arising as a basal tuft on long reddish stalks to 60cm. Juvenile leaves submerged and strap-like. | | Flowering: | Large single showy flowers to 5cm wide on long stalks, floating or emergent. Submerged flowers on short stalks do not open and are self-pollinating. | | Flower Colour: | White with dark reddish-purple base | | Flowering Time: | November to March. | | Growing Conditions: | Aquatic, in water bodies and slow-moving rivers. Full sun, semi-shade. | | Garden Use: | Highly ornamental plant for pools and dams, similar in appearance to a water lily. Locally rare. | | Plant Communities: | 30, 35, 39, 47 | | Conservation Status: | Significant within the Shire.
