Manufacturing in Yarra Ranges is characterised by a select group of large, global companies with national corporate headquarters in the municipality as well as a substantial number of small to medium enterprises, predominantly concentrated in Kilsyth and Lilydale.

This sector comprises companies in automotive components (especially in heavy vehicle production relating to local cluster activity), chemical products, building products, telecommunications or electrical equipment, recreational equipment,  products for the agribusiness sector, and light industrial services that cater to  local needs like cabinet making, metal fabrication, etc . There are also interesting examples of specialist service providers arising in niche areas such as high-end automotive (especially in Lilydale) and micro-brewing across the municipality.

The sector is vital to the local economy. Over 4,800 full-time equivalent jobs are located in the municipal economy  making it the largest industry sector for full-time jobs.  The substantial majority of these full-time jobs are held by people who live In Yarra Ranges, especially by residents aged 35-54, which represents a significant knowledge capability for the success of local businesses in this sector.
